Curriculum

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 replaces the old 10+2 system with a new 5+3+3+4 structure for children aged 3 to 18, dividing their schooling into four stages: the Foundational (5 years), Preparatory (3 years), Middle (3 years), and Secondary (4 years) stages. This model emphasizes holistic development, personalized learning, and early skill development, focusing on strengthening foundational literacy and numeracy in the initial stages.

Foundational Age

  • Focuses on play-based and activity-based learning to develop language skills and foundational literacy and numeracy.
  • Emphasizes holistic development including physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional growth.

Preparatory

  • Focuses on building foundational knowledge, language and numeracy skills, using play and activity-based methods and classroom interactions.
  • Introduces subjects like mathematics, science, and languages through activity-based teaching and learning.

Middle

  • Emphasizes experiential learning in sciences, mathematics, arts, social sciences, and humanities, and focuses on critical learning objectives, moving away from rote memorization.
  • Introduces vocational education and multidisciplinary learning.

Secondary

  • Offers flexibility in subject choices, allowing students to explore various disciplines like science, humanities, and arts without rigid separation.
  • Focuses on developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and preparing students for higher education and careers.

This 5+3+3+4 structure aims for a more holistic, flexible, and student-centric approach to education in India.
